Your Ego Isn’t the Villain!
Ever felt torn between what you should do, what you want to do, and what you feel others expect of you? Welcome to the dynamic interplay of Freud’s Ego, Id, and Superego—concepts that, when misunderstood, can lead to frustration, doubt, self-judgment, and unfulfilment.
When we think about the term "ego," it often carries a negative connotation. Popular culture has framed it as something to overcome, labelling it as selfish, arrogant, or self-centred.
But what if we’ve misunderstood the essence of the ego? What if, instead of being an obstacle, it’s actually the gateway to our authentic self - actually your authentic self striving to express your true values?
Let’s delve into the definitions and dynamics of our Ego, our Id, and our Superego and explore how they interplay with our authentic self-expression.
The Masks We Wear: Understanding the Id and Superego
Freud’s psychoanalytic model is a cornerstone of understanding the human psyche. At its core, it describes three distinct elements that influence our thoughts, behaviours, and emotions:
The Id: The Impulsive Mask.
This is the impulsive, instinctual part of us that seeks instant gratification. It’s driven by primal desires and often surfaces when we stray from our highest values.
It emerges when we compare ourself to others, inject their priorities into our life, and lose touch with what matters most to us. This exaggerates them and minimises us—it's not our authentic self. It’s a mask. Imagine scrolling through social media and feeling the urge to buy something you don’t need or pursuing a goal that doesn’t align with your purpose—this is the Id at play. It seeks instant gratification, pulling us away from our authentic self.
The Superego: The Righteous Mask. This is the internalized voice of societal expectations, cultural norms, and parental influences. It’s the "shoulds" and "oughts" that we carry, often at odds with our true desires.
This 'who I should be' is the Superego, and often results in us becoming proud, but creates inner conflict when misaligned with our authentic self.
When we wear the mask of our Superego, the pride we feel results in us projecting these expectations onto others, minimising them and exaggerating us—again, it’s not our authentic self but another mask.
The Ego: The mediator between the Id and Superego, the Ego navigates the complex terrain of reality, helping us make decisions that balance these forces. When aligned with our highest values, the Ego becomes our True Ego—a reflection of our authentic self, driven by our highest values.
It’s not the ego often vilified as arrogance or selfishness. Instead, it’s the essence of who we truly are, aligned with what inspires and fulfils us most.
Many of us misunderstand these components, allowing the Superego or the Id to dominate. This creates inner conflict, frustration, and a sense of unfulfilment. The key lies in understanding these dynamics and aligning them with our authentic self.

The True Ego: A Reflection of Your Highest Values
So at the core of our being lies the True Ego—our authentic self, driven by our highest values. This is not the ego often vilified as arrogance or pride but the essence of who we are when we live congruently with what matters most to us.
When we silence the noise of external expectations about who we should be and who we expect others to be, we reconnect with our True Ego.
Here we have clarity, fulfilment, resilience, and the freedom to express our unique genius while making a meaningful impact.
When we align with our highest priorities:
Clarity emerges: We see challenges not as obstacles but as opportunities for growth.
Purpose becomes clear: Life’s trials fuel us rather than derail us.
Fulfillment arises: We move through life with gratitude and inspiration.
When we live congruently with our highest priorities, we unlock clarity, focus, and purpose. Challenges no longer derails us—they fuel us. This is our True Ego, living with inspiration and gratitude.
The True Ego is the part of us that thrives in balance, where we embrace both support and challenge, pleasure and pain. It’s here that we find resilience, creativity, and meaning.

Practical Steps to Align with Your True Ego
Identify Your Highest Values: Reflect on what truly matters to you. What inspires you? What gives your life meaning? Living in alignment with these values anchors you to your authentic self.
Question the Superego: When you feel the weight of societal expectations, ask: Whose values am I living by? Are they mine, or have I subordinated to someone else’s?
Balance the Id: Notice when you seek instant gratification or compare yourself to others. Ask: What am I seeking and what am I avoiding? What deeper purpose can I connect with instead?
Embrace Both Sides: Life is a dance of contrasts. Recognize that every challenge has a hidden blessing and every success carries its own challenges. This balanced perspective empowers resilience and fulfillment.
Practice Gratitude: Gratitude is the bridge to balance. By appreciating both sides of every experience, you dissolve judgments and align with your True Ego.
The Power of Living Authentically
When we align with our True Ego, we:
Reclaim our power: Free from masks and projections, we live authentically.
Achieve emotional balance: We no longer swing between pride and shame but find poise in the present moment.
Make a meaningful impact: By living true to ourselves, we inspire others to do the same.
